I found this installation very interesting. P.Williams created an exhibition, which I believe to be called 'Box Heads' or 'Art Scene' at the Huntington Beach Art Centre. It was an interactive exhibit where members of the public could move around the boxed and make their own installations. I think this is a really clever way to get people to be interested in your work. P.Williams also does illustrations of people and these images can be found in the sketchbook section of his website. I really like the way he illustrates people because they are mostly simple line drawing but they look so effective. Here are a few that I like:

People and Characters Research

This link shows some images that I have taken from tattoo books a few images from tattoos on people. These images influenced me a lot and I really like the styles and techniques that have been used. From these images I will take the most inspiration from the colours and colouring techniques used because I think that is what makes the image look effective.

Early Work

Caitlin Hackett is an illustrator from Oakland and I decided to look at her because she created imaginable animals which is what I am doing also. I really like her ideas and I am really influenced by her work.

Illustrations I like:
I really like this because of the trees coming out of the head, I think it is so random but it works.
I think this is amazing. I like how the lion has many eyes and the idea of a deceased extra head attached.
This is my favourite illustration of hers because I think it is so creative and I think it just looks awesome
in general. I really like the texture of the fur.

Animals and Creatures - 4 Final Images

For the animals and creatures project the aim was to create imaginable animals and produce 4 final drawings. I filled five sketchbooks with drawings of animals from out and about and from when we went to Flamingo Land and I used a lot of my drawings for reference. I started putting random aspects of animals together to create a new unusual animals and basically just decided which ideas I thought worked well together.

This is a combination of a rabbit and a deer where I put deer antlers on a rabbits head. I didn't know at the time but I found out that this was already a thing which I was a little disappointed about but I still the drawing none the less. I used neutral water colours to create this and I really like the effect it gives.

This is basic drawing of a deer but I took influence from Caitlin Hackett and added extra eyes to the animal which I think looks quite interesting and unusual and I simply drew this with pencil.

This is my favourite one of the four because I think the technique I used works really well with the type of animals I've chosen (elephant with a snake trunk). I created this using mono print and I used a pen to draw the outlines and my finger to smudge areas where I wanted shading. The pen gave a nice bold outline and the shading created texture on the animals skin, especially the elephant.

This is my least favourite drawing because I am not the best at using charcoal but I thought I'd give it a go but it didn't really turn out how I wanted it to. I basically drew a lion with wings but I think it looks very rushed and messy.

This is my friend Stacey who creates a lot of digital art where she creates her own animals characters etc and I think they are amazing.

Drawings I like:

I really like the fur texture of this drawing, I think it looks very realistic and I like combination of the animal and skull.
I really like the colours used and how the expression has been captures in this image. I think there are a lot of good elements to this drawing that make it a successful imaginative drawing.
This drawing reminds me of Caitlin Hackett's art. I really like the idea of this one and I am very inspired by it.

Andrew Hutchinson is an illustrator from North Yorkshire who specialises in animals and the countryside. I really like his drawings because they are so realistic and the techniques he uses are really effective.

Illustrations I like:

I think this drawing captures the colours of the tiger really well. It amazes me how someone can draw something so
realistic and get every aspect of the animal basically perfect/
I really like the scales on this drawing because he captures the shine and the 'wet look' of the snake.
This is my favourite image because not only does it reflect the image of a dog flawlessly but I really like how he
has created the fur.

Martin Hargreaves is an illustrator from Brighton and I decided to research him because he illustrates imaginable animals. I really like some of the images he creates because they are unusual and very imaginative.

Illustrations I like:

This isn't necessarily an animal created by him but the way he has created the actual illustration is very life like.
He has really captured the texture of the feathers and other features of the creature.
Just like the first image I really like the techniques used to create the feathers and to make the creature look realistic.

Animals and Creatures: Sketchbook Five

Sketchbook Five Photo Album

For my last sketchbook I drew a range of different animals with references from books and internet images and I also started to create my own animals and creatures to develop into my finals pieces.

Animals and Creatures: Sketchbook Four

Sketchbook Four Photo Album

For these images I focussed mainly on texture and the fur/feathers of the animals and I think I created some quite good techniques for future reference.

Animals and Creatures: Sketchbook Three

Sketchbook Three Photo Album

These are some watercolour paintings from my third sketchbook. I had a lot of fun creating these and I really like the outcomes of most of them.

Animals and Creatures: Sketchbook Two

Sketchbook Two Photo Album

These are some sketches and drawings I like from my trip to Flamingo Land zoo. I really like most of these drawings because they were fun to draw and the animals were really interesting to draw.

Animals and Creatures: Sketchbook One

Sketchbook One Photo Album

These are some sketches from the live animal session we did and I really like most of the images I drew. Some images are really bad and unfinished but it was because all the animals moved a lot so it was quite hard to capture an image.

Taxidermy

Taxidermy Photo Album

We also drew from taxidermy animals which was really fun and it was much easier to draw than the live animals because they weren't alive and moving around.

Live Animals

Live Animals Photo Album

As another part of our Animals and Creatures project we had some live animals come in for us to draw. The animals ranged from spiders to snakes and it was a very fun experience and I think I got some really good drawings and sketches.

Flamingo Land

Flamingo Land Photo Album

As part of the Animals and Creatures project we went to Flamingo Land for the day to look around the zoo. The weather was really bad so I didn't get many drawings done at the zoo but I got some good images and quick sketches to draw from afterwards.

Brynn Metheney is an illustrators from Oakland, CA whose work is based around imaginable animals. I really like her work because it is so unique and I think she will have a lot of influence on my sketches and ideas.

Illustration I like:

This is one of the original sketched from Brynn's sketchbook. I really like how realistic
these images look even though there isn't much detail in them.
This is also from her sketchbook and I really like the animal idea in this one.
It looks to me like a lizard/dinosaur and I think it is really imaginative.
This is one of her actual illustrations and I like this because of the lines and tones used.
She obviously creates her images digitally therefore I think it makes these images even more inspiring.
This is also one of Brynns illustrations and I like this because she has made the animals look so realistic
by making the fur etc look real which is very hard to do digitally(in my opinion).

Katherine Asher is a freelance illustrator who has worked for companies such as Max Factor, BBC and Armani. She illustrates a range of subjects but I particularly like her animal drawings.

Illustrations I like:
I really like this illustration because I think the simplicity of it has a really nice effect.
I think the reason that it works so well is because the media she has used creates
texture and shape therefore the initial outline of the bird is very effective.
I am very intrigued by the style of her work because her drawings are so simple yet they
have some kind of effective detail about them. I really like the greys used in this illustration along with
the tones that have been created.
This illustration is so loose and that's why I liked it so much. The way the nest has been drawn is really nice,
I like how it's messy yet you still know what it is representing. I also really like the shading on the
birds body and head, I think it adds a soft texture to the image.
I really love the colours used on this illustration, they are so bright and vibrant and it captures the texture
of the bird really well.

Live Animal Drawing Photos

Live Animals Photo Album

Today we had live animals come in to draw and it was one of the best experiences ever. There was a range of animals to hold and draw such as a snake, a meerkat, tarantula and a parrot. It was quite hard to draw some of the animals because some moved a lot but it was very fun. The animals had amazing textures and patterns which made it more challenging to draw.

David Hockney is an English painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer and photographer. He contributes to Pop Art and is very influential to other artists.

Illustrations I like:
This illustration is a self portrait in the 1950's. I really like this technique he has used but I chose
this image because I wanted to show the comparison between his work in the 50's through to
the 00's.
This illustration was done a decade after the first image and I think you can see a clear
change in the way he sketches. I really like the simplicity of these images because he makes it work
really well.
I really like this drawing because it is similar to what I have been working on lately and I just think
it gives me a lot of inspiration. David also paints and photographs but his drawings are my favourite
type of work he does.
This last illustration was created in the 00's and I think you can definitely see a change in drawings from the
50's until now. He has developed a lot as in he has added more detail, colour and realism to his drawings
and I think it works really well.

Sketchbook Four

Sketchbook Four Photo Album

These are some of the sketches I like from my sketchbook from the beach. I am really impressed with some of the techniques and materials I used. I used graphite powder for the first time but I was a bit unsure of how to use it so I didn't use it much. Overall it was a pretty good day of drawing.

Sketchbook Three

Sketchbook Three Photo Album

These are some of the sketches that I like from my life drawing sketchbook. I really like some of the techniques I have used and considering this is my first time life drawing I think I did pretty well.
